Racine students learn how to recycle and reuse garbage

RACINE — Students in 4K classrooms at Janes Year-Round Elementary School, 1425 N. Wisconsin St., took home a variety of bird houses, jewelry boxes and piggy banks before spring break — but these weren’t ordinary crafts.

All of the items they took home with them Wednesday were made out of recyclable garbage the students collected, according to teacher Florencia Garza-Blas.

Part of the “Creative Curriculum” new to Janes this year, the six-week study unit called “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” taught children how to be good stewards of the world around them.

“To me, it’s very valuable because it teaches children about keeping our environment clean and safe, and it teaches them how to do it,” Garza-Blas said.
